Sebastian Gunawan Dazzled on a MidSummer Night's Dream

Jakarta. Shakespeare's 15th century romantic comedy "A Midsummer Night's Dream" inspired Indonesian couturier, Sebastian Gunawan, for the spring/summer 2016 collection of his first line.

"When I was choosing the fabrics for this collection, I was drawn to those with unusual floral and foliage designs," said the soft-spoken designer. "[The fabrics] seemed to have transported me to an enchanted forest, like that of the ‘Midsummer Night's Dream.’"

The collection was presented Thursday, Nov 19, in the Ciputra Artpreneur in Kuningan, South Jakarta. For the fashion show, Soeryanto Decoration bedecked its ballroom with exotic flowers, ferns and foliage from floor to ceiling. A chorus of chirping birds and cicadas ushered the guests into Shakespearean mystical forest at the ballroom.

Sebastian presented 80 couture evening gowns and cocktail dresses in the show.

"Most of them require long hours of painstaking handwork," the designer said.

The classic romantic song "Loving You" kick-started the fashion parade that evening.

In the first session, Sebastian presented a series of cocktail and evening gowns in soft creamy hues.

These dresses, made of fine materials, such as lace, silk chiffon, organza and taffeta looked charming and graceful on the models.

Covered in shimmering powder, the models seemed like ethereal fairies waltzing through the dark forest in the fashion show.

Sebastian also presented Elizabethan-style ballgowns, adorned with fine embroideries and ornate ruffles, in the first session of the show. These full-blown ballgowns, however, might look a bit out of place, even in Jakarta’s most lavish parties.

In the second session, Sebastian presented a series of lilac dresses. Dotted with Swarovski crystals and floral appliques, these dresses looked very sweet and feminine.

The show culminated with black evening dresses made of thick brocade and jacquard. Adorned with silver and golden floral prints, these dresses evoked a dramatic and glamorous look on the models. Wearing these dresses, they would certainly dazzle on red-carpet events.

Frank Cintamani, founder and chairman of the Asian Couture Federation (ACF), was impressed with the fashion collection presented that evening. At the end of the fashion show, he awarded the designer with a certificate which established the house of Sebastian Gunawan as "the best couture house in Indonesia."

The designer is currently an extraordinary member of ACF. Through the organization, Sebastian has been invited to present his collection at the "Haute Couture Fashion Week" in Paris next July.

The Haute Couture Fashion Week is held in Paris by the Fédération Française de la Couture, du Pret-a-Porter des Couturiers et des Createurs de Mode'twice each year, in January and July.

"[The French federation] is currently the strongest high-fashion organization in the whole world," said Sebastian. "It's really an honor for me to get invited to their main event."

Sebastian Gunawan is the first Indonesian designer ever invited to the prestigious event. In July next year, he will be presenting his couture collection in the international event together with three other ACF's designers, including Chinese designer Guo Pei, Japanese designer Yumi Katsura and Filipino designer, Michael Cinco.

“I hope I can achieve international recognition through this international event in Paris,” Sebastian said.
