Sebastian Gunawan's Cheongsam Festivity

I was happy to know that the first fashion show I watched in 2012 would be from Sebastian Gunawan. There’s an image of a lady in cheongsam on the invitation and the fashion show would be titled Shanghai Swing. So it’s obvious that the fashion show would showcase Sebastian Gunawan’s creativity in designing cheongsam to welcome Chinese New Year.

I can recall how amazed I was to see how cheongsam could turn into extraordinary pieces of art in Seba’s hand last year. I also felt so excited to see beautiful dresses he created in Reflection of You fashion show. Apparently, Seba tried to maintain his signature style he had built in those previous shows in creating Shanghai Swing collection.

There were 50 looks which are Seba’s interpretations of cheongsam paraded in the fashion show that took place at the ballroom of Hotel Mulia, January 11, 2012. “Cheongsam is similar with kebaya, traditional attires that can be explored in modern way. It’s also like little black dress which is something that women keep and can be worn anytime,” said Seba.

The collection was so varied; many of the cheongsam are detailed with crystal, beads and feathers so they look very glamorous. Some cheongsams have narrow waistline and wide skirt as the designer was inspired by 50’s Dior skirt. The cheongsam also came in two-piece attires, such as a mix between strapless dress with bolero; or a combination of blouse, bolero and skirt.
